Jeffrey Bewley: The Importance of Properly Sizing Stalls in Your Tie Stall Barn

Dr. Jeffrey Bewley and the team at CowFocused Housing provide dairy businesses the expertise and advice they need to build comfortable, practical and productive dairy cow environments—those which not only provide cows adequate freedom of movement, but also space and comfort they need to remain as happy and healthy and possible.

And one type of housing that Dr. Jeffrey Bewley and his team consult on is the tie stall barn—a style of cow housing that requires careful attention and understanding of dairy cow spatial needs in order to effectively maximize cow production and welfare.

The co-author of the 2015 article “Three stalls every tie stall barn needs,” Dr. Bewley walks the ready through the importance of spatial requirements when building or renovating a tie stall barn—as making note of such requirements helps the dairy farmer avoid the disruption of their animals’ natural behavior.

In the article, Dr. Jeffrey Bewley recommends farmers take careful measurements of their animals to achieve more accuracy in terms of stall dimensions and comfort.
